1. Tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose a career in law?
I’ve been in the practice of Property Law for the past 8 years. I have worked in various organisations, small and big and won laurels from every firm, company and organisation I’ve worked for. I achieve most in the workplace by being sincere, honest and punctual, and working in the best interests of the company.
Law is Dynamic. It is constantly changing and never boring. It is never monotonous. The decisions you take are a mixture of logical derivations, established principles and statutory law. This is what makes it interesting.
2. What are the benefits of carrying out locum work as opposed to working in a permanent role?
Working as a locum gives you more exposure working in different environments, with colleagues having wider experience from whom you can learn and grow. There is always somebody who you can fall back on or take advice from if you are in doubt. It gives you flexibility to choose your own working times and holidays. It is challenging and more rewarding than a permanent job, with less responsibility.
3. How do you keep on top of training and keep up to date with the latest legislation etc. when working as a locum?
The major source of training is in-house training. I also attend various conferences and seminars organised by the law society. Law Gazettes also provide lot of the latest legislations.
4. What are the biggest challenges that you face when working as a locum?
You will never know what sort of work you will be walking into. It is always a challenge to be up to the expectation of the new employer. You should, in the very little time available, not only prove your ability but also make sure that you leave a positive mark in the organisation whereby the organisation feels confident and safe to call you back into their service as and when the necessity arises.
5. What advice would you offer to someone who was considering taking on locum work?
Be punctual, honest, helpful, and friendly - work hard and be sincere. Don’t make mistakes - try to leave a positive mark on the organisation, and always take advice when you are in doubt. Always aim to act in the best interests of the organisations and abide by the contract terms.
6. Do you find it easy to integrate into each law firm when working as a locum?
Yes, to date I have not had any issues. The key to this is to be sincere, and act in the best interests of the organisation.
7. As a locum, do you find that you get to experience a wide variety of caseloads?
Yes, as a locum you not only experience a wide variety of caseloads, but also get to learn more from colleagues who are experienced in wide variety of work.
8. What do you do outside of work to relax?
I enjoy travelling, listening to music and spending time with my family and friends.
