When people dream of their ideal role what springs to mind is the perfect position in the perfect environment. What is often overlooked is the importance of location in terms of your personal well-being and health. Yes, everyone would love the prospect of working in a warm, sunny climate to fully maximise quality of life in their downtime, but other considerations come into play. Reasons for relocation and emigration massively vary and are incredibly personal so shouldn’t be generalised. For one professional it could be a desire to be near family or friends that motivates them, for another it could be a completely new move and the kickstart to their career.
Regional moves are common, international moves less so. They require a different and more specialist approach, but the advice remains similar- don’t be afraid to take a great opportunity on the basis of your current location, you could miss out on your dream role or the opportunity to secure your dream role. This decision should not come lightly, thorough research should be conducted for any move. Make sure you are aware of anything that could limit your integration such as any cultural differences, disparity in the cost of living, language requirements etc. There are often strong expat communities that can help with advice and any questions you may have as well as the prospective company itself.
Be open to relocating. Your dream role might be further than you can fathom.
